On the Island where I grew up

I still remember my first flying class. How the instructor called out, This is how it’s done! as he leapt into the air, his arms flung outwards as he ascended. Spreading his wings wide, he flapped slowly and gracefully as he glided around the classroom, his shoes just skimming the hair of the tallest boys. We students stared open-mouthed, our wings fluttering from our backs in nervous anticipation. But when we tried, we were out of control, crashing into light fixtures and ceiling fans before plummeting to the floor in a shower of feathers. Even the most graceful boys swooped at odd angles before skidding to the floor in lopsided landings. There were so many bruised elbows and knees. The boys who learned the fastest were the same boys who grew too cocky and soared out of classrooms and over the Island, only to be found hours later, hanging from telephone wires or passed out beneath plate-glass windows, their eyes staring blankly at the sun. A few died in this way. Others were kidnapped by strangers. Still others were blown out to sea by the strong trade winds. Islanders watched them go, dipping and rising like crazed butterflies, their bodies growing smaller and smaller until they were nothing but a shimmer on the horizon.
